Preseason performances are not indicative of league performance of the teams. However, the warm up games helps the team gel together and build up confidence going into the season. With current champions Chelsea having a disastrous preseason and aspiring gunners having a high flying preseason, the league will get further exciting. Check out the EPL top 5 preseason rankings in the article.
5. Chelsea – Blues’ preseason can not be any worse
The 2015-16 preseason performance of Chelsea raises questions on whether this is the same team which had won the title and the league cup double just last season. Maybe it’s typical of Jose’s 3rd season with the same club! Chelsea have not won a single game in normal time in the preseason whereas they have lost 3 out of 5 games. Loss to the minnows New York Red Bulls was disastrous, loss to Arsenal in FA Community Shield was new and loss to Fiorentina was not a surprise. With a poor preseason performance and a tough initial fixture, the road ahead looks gloomy for the Pensioners.
4. Manchester City – Citizens’ poor form continues
The Citizens kicked off the pre-season campaign with 2 wins against Australian minnows Adelaide United and Melbourne City however the margins were small. But when pitted against Real Madrid, Roma and VfB Stuttgart, they lost two and won just one that too on penalties. Manchester City will continue to struggle in the European competitions and they might continue their poor league form towards the end of last season. Luckily for Manchester City, the initial league games aren’t quite tough. They have very little time to gain their form. Dominated minnows and succumbed to European biggies – that’s typical of Manchester City.
3. Liverpool – Reds gain confidence by defeating minnows
Though Liverpool have won 5 and drew 1 in the preseason, none of the teams can be equated to any Premier League side. They went and conquered the minnows Thai Premier League XI, Brisbane Roar and Adelaide United from Asia and Australia. The initial fixture of Liverpool is also of the same intensity as title rivals Manchester City. Hence, the preseason confidence will definitely help to build up a strong start to the season. Reds’ first season without Gerrard is so far solid but they are yet to be tested enough by any of the football giant clubs.
4. Manchester United – Red devils are up for the challenge again
2 seasons of mediocrity is too much for the Red Devils. Now, with an entirely revamped squad Louis van Gaal looks refreshed to kick start the league fight. The new signings have started performing at the level expected. If they continue, it could be a wonderful season for the United. Though their preseason performance is mixed with a win against Barcelona and a loss against Paris Saint-Germain, the team has got on together really well. With the early signings (characteristic of Chelsea’s 2014-15 season signings) and the good preseason, Manchester United will mount a difficult challenge to the title rivals.
5. Arsenal – Gunners’ artillery all set to dominate the pitch
Arsenal squad is filled with maturity (signing a seasoned winner, Petr Cech, adds to it), with squad depth (helps in the long run of the league), with confidence, passion and drive to challenge title. Having won all the 5 games so far, Arsenal are in an upbeat mode. Neither were they troubled by injuries, nor were they tormented by confidence sapping Jose Mourinho (Win against Jose’s Chelsea in FA Community Shield is a hyper confidence booster). They have conceded only one goal and scored 15 goals in 5 games. It’s definitely a continuation to the strong form they exhibited in the second half of last season. If they sustain their performance long enough, they could see Arsene Wenger hold the title after 11 seasons.
