City has performed better than Chelsea against the top teams

Chelsea and Manchester City are currently level at the top of the Premier League table on points (46 points), goals scored (44 goals) and goals conceded (19 goals). It’s a rare happening at the top. But when it comes to earning points evenly across all the teams, City fared better. City have earned 2.5, 2, 2.5 and 2.2 points per game against the top 5, 6th to 10th, 11th to 15th and bottom 5 teams respectively. Chelsea has performed much better against the bottom teams than the top teams. They have earned 1.2 points per game against the top 5 teams against 3 points per game against the bottom 5 teams.

Last season Chelsea took 6 points off Man City and Liverpool, took 4 points off Man Utd, Tottenham & Arsenal, and still finished 3rd in the table. This season they currently just have the edge over City at the top, but a season has always been won by consistency – regardless of the quality of opposition. Head to head results often have a bearing on the league winners, so it will be interesting to see what happens at Stamford Bridge at the end of the month when Chelsea host City. The points per game stat is interesting, and this is where City’s consistency appears to stand out, although both teams can often score 4 or 5 goals in a single game which maybe muddys this stat. All teams have had a lot of rogue results this season, and it is becoming harder and harder to predict match outcomes. As a Chelsea fan myself, I am currently more concerned about points than stats but who know what can change between now and the end of the season!
