Spanish La Liga 2015-16 – Barcelona vs Real Madrid – Gameweek 1 stat corner
Barcelona and Real Madrid have begun Spanish La Liga quest with away games against Athletic Club and Sporting Gijon respectively. Only Barcelona managed to pocket 3 points, but did they perform better than Los Blancos? Let’s look deeper.
Real Madrid fired more than twice the number of shots fired by Barcelona: Madrid players shot 27 times in the game which is close to one shot in every 3 minutes whereas Barcelona shot only 10. Cristiano Ronaldo alone had attempted 10 shots followed by Gareth Bale with 4 shots. However, there was a lot of wayward shooting from Los Blancos.
Los Blancos exercised wayward shooting: More than half of Madrid’s shots were off target making them look like a team full of personalities with an eye for goal and not for the team. Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale together shot 5 on target taking 14 shots. It’s just 36% on target. For world class players, these numbers are indeed quite disappointing.
The many shots Real Madrid fired at goal weren’t lethal: Even with this wayward shooting, Madrid managed to test the opponent goalkeeper more. They had managed to shoot on target twice as that of Barcelona. However, they couldn’t convert a single shot among 8 on target but Barcelona managed to net one with 4 shots on target. Cristiano Ronaldo took 4 shots on target but couldn’t convert even one of them. Even with Lionel Messi’s penalty miss, they achieved a 25% conversion ratio on the shots on target as against Madrid’s 0% thanks to Luis Suarez 54th minute strike.
Keylor Navas was well guarded: On the other side of the action, the Real Madrid goal keeper was never troubled during the entire 90 minutes. There was not even a single goal on target by the opponents. Their defensive wall, formed by Raphael Varane and Sergio Ramos, was never broken as they blocked all the shots. However, Barcelona’s goalkeeper Claudio Bravo had to save couple of shots fired between the sticks. He did manage them well.
Real Madrid excelled better than Barcelona in passing: In terms of passing, traditionally Barcelona were the experts. But in the first game week though, Real Madrid emerged as the team with more consistent and successful passing team. Toni Kroos and Luka Modric orchestrated from the midfield contributing majorly to such high passing accuracy.
With these statistics, we could sense that Real Madrid played with more rigor and intense to win the game but their misfiring attack force couldn’t result in gaining 3 points which matter most. However, a not so great performance from Barcelona earned them 3 points.
