Premier League winter transfers have always been tricky. Chelsea has splashed a lot of money in winter transfers but clubs like Manchester United and Arsenal are wary of the risk they face. This series covers the top 50 expensive Premier League winter transfers and how they have fared.

50 - Jonathan Woodgate - Tottenham Hotspur

Johnathan Woodgate signed Tottenham in 2008. In the same season, he helped Spurs win League Cup by scoring in extra time against Chelsea. His display earned him Man of the Match award as well. This trophy was Spurs’ first trophy since 1999. Though his next three seasons with Spurs were poor and marred by injury, this title would justify the money spent on him. 
49 - Dean Ashton - West Ham

Having signed to West Ham in 2006, Dean Ashton was the key figure in the inspired side which reached FA Cup finals only to lose to Liverpool in penalties after a 3-3 draw. 48 - Diego Forlan - Manchester United

Diego Forlán was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson in 2002. Playing alongside Ruud van Nistelrooy and Ole Gunnar Solskjær, he just managed to score 17 goals in 98 games. His high moment at Old Trafford is his brace against Liverpool which won the game in December 2002. Finally, he was sold to Villareal for 3.2 Million.
47 - John Hartson - Wimbledon

The English midfielder Seth Johnson’s time in Leeds United is injury prone leading to only 4 goals in 54 games.  In his 4 years time with Leeds United, he saw them getting relegated and then moved to Derby for free.

The Ivory Coast winger has played only 2 games for Manchester United. His time in United is very limited as he was loaned out to Crystal Palace and Cardiff City. Finally, he was sold back to Crystal Palace at a loss of around 67%.

Jesper Grønkjær is a very important player for Chelsea. 41 - Papiss Demba Cissé - Newcastle United

The Senegal striker started his career at Newcastle United with a bang by scoring 13 goals in just 14 games to help Magpies finish 5th in the Premier League. Since then he has scored 30 goals in 97 games, but his first season form was never to be seen.
